The Effects of Group Art Therapy on the Self-Esteem, Social Avoidance and Anxiety of the Patients with Chronic Schizophrenia

Abstract
This study is to check if group art therapy is effective in enhancing self-esteem and reducing social avoidance and anxiety of the patients with chronic schizophrenia. The study subjects are five women in their thirties and forties with schizophrenia, though initially eight such women were in the program but three of them dropped out of the program because their illness deepened. The art therapy program consists of a total of 20 sessions from February to August of 2007, one session a week and each session lasting 60 minutes. Research tools used for the study are both Pre-test and Post-test for Self-esteem, Social avoidance and Anxiety in comparative measurement, and in addition a qualitative analysis for the process of group art therapy itself. To summarize the results of the study, first, the group art therapy becomes effective on improving self-esteem of the chronic schizophrenia patients; second, displays effectiveness on the patients' social avoidance and anxiety.
